I get e-mail from all different "liberal" organizations and the following is from a group called Alter-Net, w/an article written by Ezra Klein who is a journalist for the Washington Post, which is really a great newspaper. (not only my opinion) Like the NY Times & LA Times. The folowing is a part of an article he wrote which more or less explains what is going on in Wisconsin as we speak. At least as far as I know it is still going on, hopefully no one caved!
At the beginning of this year Wisconsin was on course to end 2011 w/budget surplus of $120 Million. Walker then signed 2 business tax breaks (article didn't say but I believe it was for Wal-Mart & MacDonalds - poor companies that really need tax breaks - right!) and a conservative health-care policy experiment that lowers overall tax revenue (among other things). New legislation was not offset & turned surplus into deficit. Not the 3 billion that he claims (that's my personal input). He then used the deficit HE had created as the justification for assaulting his state's public employees. He used a law cooked up by a right-wing advocacy group called American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) . Similar laws are on the table in Ohio & Indiana. Walker's bill would strip public employees of the right to bargain collectively for anything but higher pay and would cap the amount of wage hikes they might end up gaining in negotiations. His intentions are very clear. Before assuming office, Walker threatened to decertify the state's employee unions - until he discovered that the governor doesn't have that power. But, he's spinning the measure as something else. It's very involved and I can't go into it as I really don't understand it all but it's not good.
However, bottom line - it's about destroying the last bastion of unionism in the American economy - public employees!
Walker is carrying out the wishes of his corporate master, David Koch who calls the shots for Wisconsin Republicans. Walker is just one among many WI Reps supported by Koch Industries, run by brothers David & Charles and "American For Properity". The brothers are hell-bent on destroying the labor movements once and for all.
Now, I read recently that the Koch brothers had a "secret" meeting in Palm Springs , I believe it was last month. And I could be wrong (don't quote me!) but I think I remember that Antonin Scalia (he of the U.S. Supreme Court) was one of the attendees - which is clearly not where he should be. It was also attended, again I believe, by the House Majority Leader, Eric Cantor, who the Koch bros. have given tons of $$$$ to. It was a meeting planning how to "overthrow" the Democrats in 2012. Now, the Koch Co. is one of the largest (if not the largest) polluters of our environment and are HEAVILY AGAINST any mention of global warming. Of EPA, or anything that suggests we clean up the air we breath. If something is done to do this it can cost them roughly 40 Billion each year! Hopefully, someone is working on that. They are really dangerous because w/them and if the unions are destroyed as they are trying to do, it's bye bye Democratic party.
They had some kind of meeting in Youngstown, Ohio yesterday re what their evil Governor is doing but the state democratic senators can't sit out as the WI Dem. Sens are doing as it won't matter, there aren't enuf of them. Gov. Kasich is also going to try to destroy the unions. Same in Indiana and I believe in FL. Florida has a really crazy governor. I'll bet a lot of these people are really sorry they voted for them.
When Nixon was involved in Watergate, you couldn't find one person that voted for him. It was really funny - he won by a landslide if I remember correctly, yet nobody voted for him!
Well, when I say I didn't vote for him, you can definitely believe me. I DIDN'T VOTE FOR HIM!!!!
